M6 motorway accident near junction 16

Two men remain in hospital with serious injuries following the four-vehicle M6 motorway collision near junction 16 exit for Nantwich.

An HGV and three cars were involved in the collision which resulted in a number of casualties trapped in their vehicles.

Motorway lanes were closed to allow fire crews to free those trapped.

Three of them were taken to hospital but have since been discharged.

The motorway was reopened just after 8pm last night (December 22) following collision investigation, vehicle recovery and carriageway clear-up.

The driver of the HGV tanker, a 47-year-old man from Southport, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail, pending further inquiries.

Cheshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting incident 555 of December 22 2014.
