Communities in Nantwich and Crewe are being invited to apply for grants aimed at promoting walking and cycling.

Town and parish councils, charities and voluntary organisations can apply to Cheshire East Council for up to £9,999 in funding.

Grants could be used to run free cycle awareness or bicycle maintenance courses, or for bike loan schemes.

The scheme is funded by the Department of Transport’s Sustainable Travel Transition Year (STTY) initiative.

This aims to widen access to skills, training and employment opportunities by promoting walking, cycling and public transport use.

The funding has also helped pay for a new website – travelcheshire.co.uk – which will encourage people to use the car less and opt for healthier and greener forms of transport.

Cllr David Brown, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “This new grants scheme will help us to deliver some exciting projects in Crewe and Nantwich to encourage more walking and cycling.

“We’re looking for ideas from local community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations, which will help make it easier to get around by bike or on foot.

“Ultimately, our aim is to reduce the number of journeys locally which are made by car.

“We also hope we can make it easier for people to access jobs, skills and training opportunities locally.”

Applications must demonstrate they encourage active travel in Crewe and/or Nantwich, when travelling to employment, skills and training.

They must be in line with assessment criteria set out in ‘Policy for the Allocation of Transport & Accessibility Grants’.

The closing date for applications is November 4 2016.

Applicants will be informed within six weeks of the closing date.
