A Green Party candidate has attacked Cheshire East Council chiefs’ claims how the HS2 rail project will boost Crewe and Nantwich. John Knight labelled HS2 an “expensive vanity project” and believes Cheshire East has been “betrayed” by the Government.
Crewe and Nantwich residents can have their say on the planned high-speed HS2 rail link for South Cheshire. The Government announced its preferred route last month, which includes a high-speed service from Crewe to London in 58 minutes.
A link to the planned HS2 railway has been welcomed by a South Cheshire rail passenger group boss. But John Coult, acting chair of the Crewe and Shrewsbury Passenger Association (CASPA), also warned against it overshadowing local rail improvements.
Political leaders in Crewe and Nantwich say a High Speed Rail link to Crewe will be a huge economic boost to the region. The Government announced the HS2 route north of Birmingham today, and confirmed there will be a connection point to the West Coast Main Line south of Crewe.
