Around 150 people were evacuated today after a large blaze ripped through a retirement home in Crewe.

No one is believed to have been hurt in the incident which happened at the residential complex on Rolls Avenue.

An Edwardian former orphanage described as a jewel in Crewe’s crown is set to be converted into retirement flats after standing empty for 12 years.

Cheshire East Council’s southern planning committee has given the go-ahead for Grade II-listed Webb House in Victoria Avenue, to be transformed into 54 extra care apartments with a swimming pool and gym – subject to final design tweaks being approved by planning officers.
