Victims of domestic abuse in Crewe and Nantwich have been given a lifeline in the form of £300,000 funding from BIG Lottery.
The money for Crewe Women’s Aid, the longest standing domestic abuse organisation in Cheshire East, will got towards four new refuge spaces.
The new funding bringa the total over the last year to over £500,000, giving more women and children fleeing domestic abuse a place to escape to.
Jane arrived at the refuge in 2011 with her two sons aged 11 and 13. The family moved their in the middle of the night, brought by the police for their own safety.
The family had nothing but the clothes they were wearing and Jane was suffering from severe depression.
“The abuse started in 1998 when I was pregnant and got worse and worse every year,” she said.
“I felt it was my fault, that if I had been a better wife, he wouldn’t have done the things he did. By the time we left I was so depressed I could barely function.”
Crewe Women’s Aid offers counselling, one to one support, recovery and therapeutic programmes for adults and children combining to make a real difference to the lives of their clients.
“I honestly think Crewe Women’s Aid saved my life,” Jane added. “We have our own place now and they still support me and the boys.”
