Lee Stewart of RSPCA and Sainsbury's manager

The RSPCA wildlife centre and cattery in Nantwich has teamed up with Sainsbury’s to hold collection points for donations of tinned dog or cat food.

Bosses at the Middlewich Road store approached the RSPCA Stapeley Grange manager Lee Stewart with the idea of holding collection points for food for the London Road animal centre.

Customers can drop in as many tins of cat or dog food as they want and these will be taken to Stapeley Grange to be fed to cats and kittens in the cattery or even hedgehogs in the wildlife hospital.

Lee Stewart said: “Stapeley Grange has admitted more than 260 cats and kittens and more than 500 hedgehogs this year alone, which is incredible considering the size of the centre.

hedgehog, RSPCA Stapeley“As you can imagine we get through a vast amount of food on a daily basis at the centre – so any extra tins are gratefully received.

“Your donation doesn’t have to be big, if everyone dropped in just one extra tin of cat or dog food it would make a tremendous difference to our food bill!

“The Stapeley team and all our animals would like to thank Sainsbury’s and its customers for their support to date and hope that their support continues.

“The RSPCA is struggling financially at the moment with the sheer number of animals that are coming in so food donations such as these are very welcome – every single tin of dog or cat food really helps.

“The RSPCA is a charity and we rely on public donations to exist.”

Ian Sutton, general manager at Sainsbury’s Nantwich, said: “We have decided to support the RSPCA and Stapeley Grange because of the fantastic work they do within our community.

“Sainsbury’s Nantwich is very keen to support local charities and it is nice to be able to help out in our own small way, by simply providing a way through which members of the public, our customers, can support the animals at Stapeley Grange.”

RSPCA Stapeley Grange provides temporary refuge for thousands of wild, domestic and exotic animals each year.

It is likely the centre will admit more than 6,000 animals this year, the greatest number in its 20-year history.

Sainsbury’s customers can support the programme by simply picking up an extra tin of cat or dog food and putting it in the trolley provided after paying for them at the tills. For more information on RSPCA Stapeley Grange please contact them via e-mail: [email protected]
