An insurance comparison website lists Crewe and Nantwich area as having the highest number of drink and drug drive offenders in the UK.
The data refers to the number of people in the CW postcode area who have visited the company’s website for a comparison quote in the past 12 months.
The CW postcode includes Nantwich and its rural villages as well as Northwich, Middlewich, Winsford, Congleton, Sandbach, and Holmes Chapel.
Cheshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts said: “This data is indicative of the robust action we are taking to tackle drink and drug drivers.
“It is disappointing to see that a large number of people still feel it is acceptable to drive while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.
“Over the past 12 months we have undertaken a large number of operations specifically targeting drink drivers, along with the more worrying trend of drug drivers, and as a Force we have embraced the new drug drive laws.”
The new drug drive regulations were introduced in March 2015.
They mean that officers no longer have to prove whether or not a driver is fit to drive.
Instead, they can prosecute anyone who is found to be in charge of a motor vehicle with a concentration of an illegal drug over the specified limit in their body.
Since the introduction of the new laws in March, Cheshire Police have arrested 334 people on suspicion of drug driving.
Asst Chief Cons Roberts added: “We are committed to making Cheshire’s roads safer, and we will use all of the tools available to them to help us achieve our goal.”
Should get out to the villages, the amount of drunk drivers around, Bunbury & Haughton is unbelievable
Someone close to me was very seriously injured in a taxi hit by a drunk driver. They should have much tougher punishments to discourage people.
