Crewe & Nantwich RUFC 1sts will be hoping to put their opening league defeat behind them when they welcome Matlock in the cup today (September 21)
The Vagrants side were beaten 22-8 by Tamworth in last weekend’s opening league fixture.
And it largely down to a much changed team forced due to injury, holidays and personal issues ruling out a number of first teamers.
Crewe started well despite trailing 0-7 and reduced the arrears with a penalty from fly half Jamie Little for
offside at the ruck.
Tamworth improved their lead from a well executed line-out drive for 3-14.
Crewe started the second half well and finally looked to have created a try scoring chance out wide only for the final pass to be intercepted for the strong Tamworth wing to race the length of the pitch for an unconverted try 3-19.
A penalty further improved Tamworth’s lead 3-22.
Crewe kept pressing and in the dying minutes were rewarded with centre Toby Ward (pictured) scoring a well deserved try for his man of the performance in attack and defence.
Today, Crewe entertain Matlock in the Midlands Cup, kick off 3pm at the Vagrants in Willaston.
