Crewe and Nantwich Senior Colts earned a hard-fought victory against Newcastle Staffs 28-19.
They put a fine show at The Vagrants in Willaston to take the points against an extremely strong opposition who Crewe had never beaten.
Newcastle enforced their own game early on and scored from the outstanding outside centre following a deft chip from the equally impressive fly half.
Crewe bounced back gaining good field position and possession.
Tom Ryle spotted the blind side winger out of position kicked in behind him allowing Logan Lynch to collect and score an unconverted try.
Newcastle responded in style showing how dangerous their three-quarter line was running the ball in from half way.
Crewe had a lot of possession and territory and following a lot of huff and puff by the forwards, Lynch darted through a gap and expertly offloaded to Luke Thomas.
On debut playing an age group up, Thomas carried several defenders over the line to score.
Lynch converted which added to an earlier penalty, taking the score to 13-12.
Crewe continued to play great rugby with good continuity and looked in control.
Then the outstanding Newcastle 13 stripped the ball off a Crewe forward and ran the length of the pitch unopposed to give the visitors a 13-19 lead at half-time.
Crewe started strongly after the break, with the fitness conditioning over the last eight weeks starting to show.
A barn-storming run by Adam Deegan, set up camp close to Newcastle’s line.
The back line then produced a move out of the top draw, with quality running lines from Thomas and O’Donovan and a pass from Lynch that would grace any stage which put Khol Preece over the line untouched.
Crewe missed the conversion from out wide, but eventually took the lead which ultimately they were never to relinquish.
Lynch knocked over a testing penalty, then took control as he ghosted through a gap on halfway and rounded the fullback to score under the posts making the conversion a formality.
Crewe held on for the final few minutes, ending the game with the most deserved victory.
