Nantwich Town councillors are reviewing how effective the town’s CCTV cameras are in tackling crime and disorder.
The council is set to take over the running of the 15 cameras from Cheshire East.
And councillors have been working with officers from Nantwich Police Station and a CCTV team from Cheshire East to scrutinise the quality and efficiency of the CCTV service.
A review meeting, held at Nantwich Civic Hall, has recommended improvements to the cameras’ performance.
This includes cutting back tree branches to increase the view, suggesting improvements to lighting and moving the location of some cameras.
Nantwich Town Cllr David Marren, a member of the review team, said: “Tackling crime and disorder is a high priority for the council and we recognise the important part CCTV plays in making sure our streets are safe.
“We are demonstrating our commitment to the high level of service provided by the Cheshire East CCTV team in future by pledging financial support to that service.
“Responsibility for the service in Nantwich is passing to the town council and therefore we are making sure it is fit for purpose, reflects the needs of Nantwich residents and is an effective tool for the police to use in fighting crime.”
The review is also being carried out in response to the recent introduction of the Government’s code of practice on the use of surveillance cameras by local authorities and police forces.
