Nantwich councillors today revealed they were “not even consulted” by Cheshire East Council over a move to bring back parking charges from June 15.

The four Cheshire East councillors representing Nantwich wrote a “strongly worded” joint letter to the authority asking for an explanation.

A Cheshire East Council executive has denied claims next year’s budget is a ‘blank cheque’ for raising car parking charges across Cheshire East.

Draft budget plans for 2020-21 that went out to public consultation said Cheshire East Council hopes to rake in up to £4.5 million by the end of 2023-24 after a review on car parking.

Cheshire East borough chiefs are being asked to reconsider a decision not to introduce a “late night levy” to bring in additional cash for police and the council.

Councils have had the power to implement a late night levy since 2011 – meaning an additional fee would be charged to licenced premises that can sell alcohol between midnight and 6am.
