Cheshire East Council says it is to spend £55,000 – from developer contributions – to improve the towpath near Queen’s Drive along the Shropshire Canal to prevent becoming too muddy for passers-by.

Work has started on the next phase to repair the Shropshire Union Canal breach near Middlewich after a giant 12-metre deep hole was left in the canal bank.

Paddle gates on the locks, which allow water into the canal, had been left open by a member of the public which caused the canal to overflow.

A Nantwich man has died after his Porsche Boxster careered off the A54 and crashed into a bridge over a canal.

Father-of-four Anthony Hawks, 50, (pictured) was declared dead at the scene by emergency services after the incident on the A54 Bosley Road in Congleton.

Dogs and their owners are being invited to join a mass morning dog walk along the Shropshire Union Canal in Nantwich on February 17.

The free Doggy-Do-Dahs event, from 10.30am, is being organised by the Canal & River Trust, the charity which oversees 2,000 miles of canals across England and Wales.

Canal fanatics were treated to a rare gathering of historic boats in Audlem as part of the Festival of Transport in the village.

Around 40 historic and colourful ex-working narrow boats were moored along the bottom three lock pounds of the Audlem flight of locks on the Shropshire Union Canal.

A swan was found on a South Cheshire canal peppered with shotgun and airgun pellets, the RSPCA has revealed.

The swan was found by a member of the public at Middlewich Canal and taken to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange wildlife centre in Nantwich.
