Two years on, does it sound like the Independent/Labour Alliance at Cheshire East Council are finally recognising their failure to take or consider a paramount responsibility, that of safety of its residents.

Councillors and residents have urged Cheshire East to urgently review its winter gritting policy claiming lives are at risk.
We revealed in June how some roads have been removed from the route this winter including many rural roads in and around Nantwich.

In February 2020, together with councillor colleagues, I ‘called-in’ the Labour-Independent Coalition decision to slash gritting routes across the borough.
We won a second consultation which councillors, parish councils and local leaders (including head teachers), responded to in significant detail.
Up to 230km of roads will be removed from Cheshire East Council’s winter gritting routes, the authority has confirmed.
The review into gritting – called “Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure” (WMHI) code of practice – will see 103km of roads added to the routes.

I have fought long and hard for residents from our Ward and for those who use Colleys Lane to access either the A534 Crewe/Nantwich Road or the A530 Middlewich Road, by repeatedly asking for Cheshire East’s Labour/Independent Administration to reconsider their decision to cut it from the Winter Gritting Routes.

At this week’s Cheshire East Full Council meeting I asked, once again, if the Labour/Independent Cabinet had made up its mind regarding its proposal to axe winter gritting from some of our semi-rural and rural roads.
Opposition Cheshire East councillors have “called in” a Cabinet decision to back plans to remove scores of rural roads off gritting routes.

More than 200 roads including many rural lanes in and around Nantwich will be taken off Cheshire East Council’s gritting routes after councillors approved the plan.
The controversial policy, which will come into effect from October this year, has been met with fierce criticism with many saying the council is putting lives in danger.
A Cheshire East Council report shows the authority could be about to cut 230km of roads from its winter gritting routes – including a number of rural roads around Nantwich.
The Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure report, to go before councillors next week, highlights potential changes to its winter service.
The winter freeze has brought joy and frustration to families across Crewe and Nantwich.
Thousands enjoyed the weekend snow as young and old went sledging, built snowmen and enjoyed gorgeous Winter walks.
Council chiefs in Cheshire East say they are prepared as snow and ice looks set to hit the Nantwich area tonight and tomorrow (December 16). They say stockpiles of salt, a new information centre and modern gritting vehicles based at three sites, including Wardle near Nantwich, will help the borough cope with wintry conditions.
