Cash-strapped Cheshire East closes new £11m car park on Sundays

Cash-strapped Cheshire East Council is closing its new £11 million multi-storey car park in Crewe on Sundays because it can’t afford operating costs seven days a week.

The 390-space town centre car park opened at the end of July, six months later than it should have done, after being plagued with problems during construction.

The “free after 3pm” car parking scheme on some Cheshire East Council car parks will be kept after the results of a public consultation.

But parking charges looks set to be introduced in most car parks where it is currently free, and charges may also be brought in on Sundays.

Car parking charges look set to be introduced in Middlewich, Sandbach, Alsager and other Cheshire East towns which are free at the moment.

Sunday charging is also on the cards, with Cheshire East planning to introduce a flat £1 rate for stays longer than an hour across all council-owned paying car parks in the borough on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Monthly “Tea at The Tower” guided circular walks from St Mary’s Church in Acton restarted today (September 5) after being suspended since March 2020 due to the pandemic.

The ‘Tea at The Tower’ walks  are at a relaxed pace from 1pm.
