Nantwich Museum

A stalwart of Nantwich’s community has been honoured with the Walter and Ada Dutton Prize.

Herbert Rowsell was presented with the prize at the Nantwich Museum Volunteer Conference held at Peter Wilson’s Victoria Gallery.

Robert Stones, chair of the trustees, said the award is made to unsung heroes who make a major contribution to the town.

Accepting the prize, Herbert recalled a time in 1971 when as chairman of Nantwich Historical Society, a wreath was laid at the town’s war memorial to commemorate the Battle of Nantwich.

This led to regular commemoration of the battle by the Sealed Knot Society which has now become a major part of the town’s calendar – this year being the 40th anniversary of the first commemoration.

Herbert was also involved in establishing Nantwich Museum which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2010. He is currently a member of the museum’s board of management.

The Dutton Medal is produced each year by Nantwich-born medal designer Ron Dutton in memory of his parents Walter and Ada Dutton.

They set up a fund to honour people who make an extraordinary contribution to the community.
