Nantwich St Mary’s Church will host the North West ‘s premier performance of St John Passion in April.
The performance, by renowned composer Bob Chilcott, will take place on Sunday April 6 (Passion Sunday) at 7.30pm.
As in the great Passion settings by J.S.Bach, the story is narrated by a tenor Evangelist – Stephen Newlove – accompanied by a viola and cello.
Other solo parts will be taken by members of the Nantwich Singers.
The role of the choir is to play the part of the crowd or a group of soldiers who comment from time to time in short outbursts.
They also sing four meditations which punctuate various parts in the drama.
And Nantwich folk have the chance to take part in the performance
There are five well-known Passiontide hymn texts set within the work for audience members and the choir to sing together.
Conductor Tony Metcalfe will lead Nantwich Singers at their rehearsal on Tuesday March 25 (7.30pm-8.10pm in St. Mary’s) to experience and learn these hymns.
The organist will be Simon Russell.
Tickets for the event cost £10 and are available from Think about IT or the St Mary’s Church shop.
