More than £5,000 has been raised for the Nantwich Town Mayor’s Charity, SSAFA.

Money was raised at a number of events throughout the year, culminating in the Mayor’s charity dance at Nantwich Civic Hall, which collected more than £600.

And Mayor Cllr John Lewis’s family also got involved – his 25-year-old grand-daughter raised more than £600 running a sponsored half marathon in Richmond, London.

Cllr Lewis (pictured) will present the money on May 12 to local representatives of SSAFA, a charity which cares for servicemen and their families.

He said: “My thanks go out to all those Nantwich residents and others who have given so generously over the year.

“I also want to thank councillors, friends and my close family for their support in the collections and in one case running a half marathon to raise money!

“There has been tremendous gratitude expressed by SSAFA and particularly the Cheshire branch for the money received to aid servicemen.

“And the mayor’s dance was such a success, with more than 200 people thoroughly enjoying themselves with music from the excellent Todd Miller and the Joe Loss Orchestra.”

Town market collections from residents and tourists last summer helped to raise more than £2,000, a Nantwich Band Concert in November £184, Sainsbury’s customers raised £700 on a day collection in February, and Nantwich Town football supporters club raised £70 on April 5.
