Nantwich in Bloom Gold

Members of Nantwich in Bloom have hailed their eighth consecutive Gold Award at the North West in Bloom Awards as a “tremendous accolade”.

An army of volunteers helped keep the town clean and colourful over the spring and summer, despite the searing temperatures and drought-like conditions.

It also comes after a number of vandalism incidents by youths who wrecked planters and baskets, sparking an outcry among residents.

This week, the committee picked up their Gold certificate at Nantwich Civic Hall.

Nantwich in Bloom Chairman Tony Percival said: “This is a tremendous accolade for the town.

“This has been a difficult growing year given the lack of rain throughout the summer months.

“And without the hard work of our team of volunteers, as well as the continuing efforts of ANSA, we would have struggled to secure this Gold Award.

“This year has also seen some encouraging support from the local community who expressed such anger and disgust at the vandalism we suffered earlier in the year.

“In celebrating this latest award, thanks must also go to Nantwich Town Council who continue to offer the much-needed financial support required for our work.

“We must now turn our attention to 2019 with a view to maintaining the high standards we have worked hard to deliver in recent years.”

Mayor of Nantwich Cllr David Marren said: “To win a Britain in Bloom Gold award eight years in a row is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the strong and supportive partnership the Town Council has with Nantwich in Bloom and the Nantwich litter group and the effort they put in.

“One of our aims as a council is to encourage visitors to come here and spend their money here and so keep the town flourishing.

“We partly do that by supporting a great events programme, but also by trying to ensure the first impression is always a good one, by making the town clean, green and flowery every day.

“Members of both groups are a great credit to the town.”
