People in South Cheshire could soon be governed by a new devolved Cheshire and Warrington authority as part of the Government’s devolution priority programme.
The region is one of six which has been approved to go forward under the Government’s plans to restructure local governance.
Cheshire East Council’s bid to increase council tax by almost 10% have been rejected by the government, it emerged today.
The cash-strapped authority had asked the government for “exceptional financial support” and permission to increase the charge by 9.99%.

Residents wishing to speak at next month’s Cheshire East full council meeting will be given the option to do so virtually as well as attending in person because of the “inaccessible” location.
Cheshire East has come under fire because the last three meetings of the full council were held at Jodrell Bank, and the one prior to that was at Tatton Park.
Cheshire East Council is “working hard to make roads safe”, claimed a council leader today.
It comes after many motorists flooded us with complaints about the crumbling state of our busy A roads, in particular the A530 Middlewich Road and A530 Whitchurch Road.
Angry drivers fear they are taking their lives in their hands negotiating the pothole-ridden A530 Middlewich Road near Nantwich.
The busy “A” road is now in such a state, motorists are regularly swerving in and out to avoid damage to their vehicles.
A Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust boss says they are pushing for work on a new Leighton Hospital to start in early 2027.
It comes after Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed this week that the rebuild would go ahead for seven hospitals build wholly or mostly from RAAC.

Cheshire East Council looks set to consult residents on cost-cutting proposals for its CCTV provision which could see the service reduced or even axed completely.
The council’s service currently operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days of the year, including numerous cameras in around Nantwich town centre.

Cheshire East Council is to continue a scheme which sees family members of pregnant women being paid in vouchers to stop smoking.
In 2022, the council’s adults and health committee approved a financial incentive scheme to help pregnant women quit smoking.
Nantwich Town Crier ‘sacked’ for Facebook comments
Nantwich’s Town Crier has been sacked for Facebook comments he made which one councillor alleged brought the town council into disrepute.
Dev Hobson, who has been town crier in Nantwich for three years, confirmed today he had “been let go” by the town council.
