People in South Cheshire could soon be governed by a new devolved Cheshire and Warrington authority as part of the Government’s devolution priority programme.

The region is one of six which has been approved to go forward under the Government’s plans to restructure local governance.

Cheshire East Council’s bid to increase council tax by almost 10% have been rejected by the government, it emerged today.

The cash-strapped authority had asked the government for “exceptional financial support” and permission to increase the charge by 9.99%.

Residents wishing to speak at next month’s Cheshire East full council meeting will be given the option to do so virtually as well as attending in person because of the “inaccessible” location.

Cheshire East has come under fire because the last three meetings of the full council were held at Jodrell Bank, and the one prior to that was at Tatton Park.

Dev Hobson, who has been town crier in Nantwich for three years, confirmed today he had “been let go” by the town council.

Cheshire East Council is to continue a scheme which sees family members of pregnant women being paid in vouchers to stop smoking.

In 2022, the council’s adults and health committee approved a financial incentive scheme to help pregnant women quit smoking.
