A public consultation has started on proposals for a devolution deal for Cheshire and Warrington.
The government announced earlier this month the Cheshire and Warrington region had been confirmed as part of its devolution priority programme.

The leader of Cheshire East Council has insisted as long as he runs the council the process around devolution will be transparent, adding he has already asked questions about scrutiny of an elected mayor.

People in South Cheshire could soon be governed by a new devolved Cheshire and Warrington authority as part of the Government’s devolution priority programme.
The region is one of six which has been approved to go forward under the Government’s plans to restructure local governance.

Cheshire East Council has joined the county’s two others in asking to be included in the government’s priority programme for devolution.
The councils’ leaders have written to Local Government and English Devolution Minister Jim McMahon saying they want to formally open conversations about potential new powers and funding Cheshire and Warrington could receive if it goes ahead with devolution.

A Cheshire East councillor has branded the authority a “financial basket case” and wondered why Cheshire West and Chester Council would want to get involved in a devolution deal.
Cllr Mike Sewart was speaking as the council was supposed to be discussing amendments to the terms of reference for the Cheshire and Warrington Joint Committee.

Cheshire East is meeting with government next month for talks about a possible devolution deal with Cheshire West & Chester and Warrington – but stressed it must be good for the borough.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has written to all councils encouraging them to enter discussions early so the government can devolve new powers over transport, skills, housing, planning and employment support.
The Crewe & Nantwich MP says Boris Johnson has pledged to support a northern recovery plan, during a meeting in which he is reported as saying “devolution was a disaster” in Scotland.
The Prime Minister met with Dr Kieran Mullan and other Tory MPs from northern constituencies on a Zoom call yesterday to discuss a “levelling up” agenda.
