Cheshire East Council refuses talk on winter fuel pensioners

Cheshire East Council is refusing to discuss measures to help vulnerable pensioners stripped of their winter fuel allowance when the full council meets next week.

The Conservatives tabled a notice of motion (NoM) calling for the council’s political group leaders to write jointly to the government.

More than 80,000 pensioners in Cheshire East are to lose their winter fuel allowance under the Labour government’s plans, the Conservatives have claimed.

The government announced from this year that only those in receipt of pension credit or other means-tested benefits will get the annual payments, worth between £100 and £300.

Police are appealing for witnesses after two pensioners were critically injured in yesterday’s crash in Burland, near Nantwich.

The collision involved a blue Honda 4×4 car and a white Volvo articulated heavy goods vehicle on the A534 Wrexham Road shortly before 3pm (October 9).
