Nantwich v Crewe Alexandra - challenge for the ball (1)

Nantwich Town were narrowly beaten by a Jordan Bowery header when they entertained League Two neighbours Crewe Alexandra.

The pre-season friendly proved a good work out for both sides in hot weather in front of a decent Weaver Stadium crowd.

And it was Bowery’s first half header from a good Shaun Miller cross on 40 minutes that proved the difference.

The Dabbers had former Crewe Alex youngsters Jamie Morgan, Toby Mullarkey and Caspar Hughes in their line-up, and former Crewe striker Steve Jones was on the bench.

Crewe’s new signing Alex Nicholls from Barnet was not involved, but former Bolton defender Nicky Hunt was in defence during his trial at the club.

Nantwich saw an early Matt Bell free kick go close, which was cleared by George Ray at the far post.

Bowery threatened to get away at the other end but Joel Stair tackled well, while the Dabbers defence also blocked well when Miller turned and shot inside the box.

Dabbers goalkeeper Andy Wycherley was kept busy, saving well from Bowery and then from Charlie Kirk as Crewe pressed for the opener.

The visitors deserved their lead on 40 minutes after a well worked goal.

A diagonal pass from Ng found Miller on the left and he delivered a fine cross for the powerful Bowery to climb and head home.

Both sides made significant changes at the break, with Crewe almost fielding a new XI.

Crewe youngster Regan Griffiths was denied a shot at goal by a last ditch tackle from Jamie Lawrie.

The Alex bossed possession but found a stubborn Nantwich defence in their way of second goal.

And the hosts had their chances, with Dabbers captain Caspar Hughes hitting a well struck shot just wide of Ben Garratt’s post.

Subs Clayton McDonald and Steve Jones gave Nantwich a lift as they pushed for a leveller late on, and Joe Malkin almost produced it as he fired over.

Toby Mullarkey then went close but could shoot straight at Garratt.

Malkin went close again after dribbling into the box, but his effort was well saved by Garratt.

But neither side could find the net as the visitors ran out 1-0 winners in an entertaining contest which preceded England’s quarter-final victory over Sweden.
