£350,000 overspend on replacement wheelie bins in Cheshire East

A controversial new bin charge is necessary as Cheshire East Council has overspent on replacement bins by £350,000 so far this year, its leader claims.

Cllr Rachel Bailey, Conservative leader of the council, was challenged at a full council meeting on Thursday over the decision to begin implementing a charge for new and replacement wheelie bins from next Tuesday.

An additional £1 million will be spent patching up potholes after Cheshire East Council faced more than 360 new insurance claims between April and June.

A report issued at Thursday’s full council meeting said that following a harsh winter, there were 368 new insurance claims against the council in the first quarter of 2018-19.

Cheshire East Council is set to adopt a new code of practice for road maintenance – called the Well Managed Highway Infrastructure – in line with Government guidelines introduced two years ago.

Police and RSPCA say they are continuing to investigate the death of a dog found in a canal in Nantwich with heavy chains around its body.

The grim discovery was made by walkers by bridge 89 which spans the Shropshire Union Canal south of Marsh Lane and north of the A530 Whitchurch Road.

Orphaned otter cub nursed back to health by Nantwich RSPCA centre

An otter cub, just days old, is recovering at the Stapeley Grange RSPCA wildlife centre in Nantwich after being found all on her own with no mum nearby.

The little otter, named Bramble by staff, was found by a member of the public with her eyes still closed and suffering from hypothermia next to the Menai Strait, in Bangor.
