A war of words has emerged after an Cheshire East Independent councillor says she is “recruiting candidates” for the authority’s next election in 2023.

Cllr Suzie Akers Smith, the borough’s cycling and walking champion, claims she is “starting so early” with her election preparations following a farcical debate over 20mph speed restrictions last month.

The Labour leader said today there have been 13,930 confirmed Covid-19 cases in Cheshire East — an increase of 275 from the day before.

Cheshire East Conservative councillors withdrew plans to suspend parking charges in “council-owned car parks” for the borough’s towns

Conservative group leader Cllr Janet Clowes proposed a motion to introduce free parking after 3pm in the authority’s council car park over Christmas in an effort to encourage residents to ‘shop local’.
