Nantwich teenager to compete in Open Mic UK grand final

Nantwich singing sensation Sinead D’Abreu-Hayling has made it through to the national finals of the UK Open Mic competition.

The 17-year-old former Brine Leas and Pear Tree Primary pupil has won through to the grand final after stunning judges with her classical music voice.

A head girl at a dressage and livery yard and a dairy herd manager took the top titles at a Reaseheath College awards ceremony in Nantwich which honoured apprentices.

Laura Gunnell, 18, who works for Juwel Equestrian in Winsford, was crowned Level 2 Apprentice of the Year.

Nantwich pupils studying agriculture at Reaseheath College, selected pigs which went on to take top prizes at a premier livestock show.

Year 10 pupils, aged between 14 and 15, chose six Large White x Landrace pigs for entry into the Staffordshire and Birmingham Agricultural Society’s Winter Fair.

The Government’s latest league tables for Nantwich primary schools have been published, rating schools on the improvement shown by pupils in reading, writing and maths.

The tables show the percentage of pupils achieving the expected standard by the end of Key Stage 2 (year 6), compared to where pupils were at the end of Key Stage 1 (year 2).

Christmas has come early to friends in a Nantwich school choir and band after receiving a £1,000 donation towards their trip to Venice.

The money, donated by The County Group, means Brine Leas School Choir and its Concert Band, can look forward to a trip of a lifetime next summer.
