The first phase of a three-year programme to re-stock River Weaver in Nantwich has taken place.
It comes 15 months after the river suffered devastating pollution incidents in 2023 which led to the deaths of thousands of fish.
Crewe & Nantwich MP Connor Naismith has called for strong action against agricultural pollution after recent slurry dumping incidents in the River Weaver.
Mr Naismith MP spoke out in the House of Commons this week about the “urgent need for addressing agricultural slurry dumping”.
The Environment Agency has investigated 54 farms as part of their probe into slurry pollution incidents which hit the River Weaver in Nantwich in 2023, it has emerged.
And they have taken 40 actions in total – including eight site warnings, four warning letters and one notice as part of the long-running probe.
Residents in Nantwich have hit out at workers who are leaving vehicle engines idling, causing pollution in local streets.
Nantwich Town Council has been putting up “No Idling” signs at various locations in the town, including level crossings and the bus station.
South Cheshire WI groups teamed up with a Nantwich councillor to highlight the pollution problems in the River Weaver in the town.
Members of the Hough & District, Middlewyches, Woodnoth-cum-Shavington and Warmingham WI wanted to highlight the national “Clean Rivers for People and Wildlife” campaign.
Furious River Weaver campaigners have hit out after farm workers were caught on camera in Audlem washing thousands of litres of slurry into drains.
Environmental groups fear the slurry will now be washed into the nearby River Weaver, causing more pollution and fish deaths.

A national plastic pollution expert is to give a talk in Nantwich to start a campaign for the town to become ‘plastic free’.
