Three-weekly black bin collections will be introduced across Cheshire East from April 2026 – despite heavy opposition from residents and some councillors.

The environment and communities committee voted narrowly by seven to six yesterday (Wednesday) to change to a three-weekly collection, with one councillor saying “the fact is we can’t afford to not do this”.

Crewe Labour councillor Dawn Clark is now planning to campaign against her own administration’s plans to empty the household waste bins just once every three weeks.

Subscriptions to renew or sign up for the first time to Cheshire East Council’s Garden Waste Recycling Scheme have opened today.

Residents will need to opt-in to the scheme to use their garden bin to recycle green waste and will pay an annual subscription fee for their bin to be collected.

Cheshire East Council should suspend proposed parking and green bin charges until it knows how it will be financially compensated for the scrapping of HS2, a councillor said.

Cllr Reg Kain (Lib Dem) said if the council had committed £11m to HS2, of which £8m had already been spent, then the additional £3m would be returned to the council budget.
