Cheshire East Council to increase spending by more than £16million

Cheshire East is proposing to increase spending on services by more than £16m in 2022/23 and is looking for an £11.8m increase in council tax to help fund it.

The Medium Term Financial Strategy (budget) will be voted on at full council on Thursday (February 24).

Members of the corporate policy committee agreed to recommend that full council approves the increase as part of its budget for 2022/3.

Cheshire East residents look set to see an increase of 4.43% in the amount they pay towards policing.

If the increase suggested by Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer is ratified by the police and crime panel on Friday (February 4) that will mean an extra £10 a year on the police precept for a band D council tax payer across the county.

The figure, obtained under FOI by Local Democracy Reporting Service, accounts for the years since the local authority was founded in 2009 to the end of the last financial year in April 2021.

There is no justification for Council tax increases this year.

But despite that, Crewe residents will have to pay an increased Council Tax to no less than all the four authorities they are obliged in law to pay…..and in most cases the increases are many times over the rate of inflation.
