Nantwich Museum to stage January Civil War Talks

Nantwich Museum have launched four Civil War talks for January 2025, which will all take place in the Museum’s Millennium Gallery.

They start on Thursday January 9th at 7pm with “Communication and Propaganda in the English Civil War” by Helen Cooke.

“English Civil War Comes to Nantwich” opens on Tuesday January 9 at Nantwich Museum.

The exhibition, which runs until Saturday February 3, outlines the war which arrived in the town in 1643 when it became a Parliamentarian garrison.

Thousands of people gathered in Nantwich and Acton to enjoy the 50th anniversary of the “Battle of Nantwich” on Holly Holy Day.

Events took place in Acton and across the town, before the Sealed Knot parade down Welsh Row and the battle re-enactment on Mill Island in Nantwich.

English Civil War author to talk at bookshop in Nantwich

Historical fiction author Charles Cordell will talk about his debut novel “God’s Vindictive Wrath” at Nantwich Bookshop on January 20.

The novel is set in the first weeks of the English Civil War in October 1642, Warwickshire, where 30,000 men gathered to determine the fate of nations and to pursue their own ideals and enmities through brutal and bloody combat.

St Mary’s Church in Acton, near Nantwich, have organised ‘Holly Holy Day’ events on Saturday January 21, on the day of The Sealed Knot Battle of Nantwich re-enactment.

The church will be open from 9am until 11.30am serving hot drinks and buttered toast.

New booklet on Nantwich’s role in English Civil War is unveiled

A newly published downloadable booklet “Visiting the Nantwich English Civil War Battlefields” is now available from the Nantwich Museum.

The booklet by Keith Lawrence, Director of the Cheshire Civil War Centre at the museum, considers the four battles which took place in the area in 1643 and 1644, and details routes by which the sites can be visited.
