Cheshire East Council leader Rachel Bailey has blamed the ‘impasse of Brexit’ after the Conservatives lost overall control of the authority in a huge shock.
After a dramatic day of results, the council – which is now made up of 34 Tories, 25 from Labour, 19 independents and four Liberal Democrats – has switched to no overall control.
Conservatives have lost control of Cheshire East Council after the local elections as they felt the backlash from disgruntled voters.
The Tories retained Nantwich South and Stapeley, as well as rural wards such as Audlem, Wrenbury, Bunbury, Wybunbury and Willaston.
Thursday May 2 could be a turning point in local politics.
Borough, town and parish council elections will provide the ‘fall out’ – if any – from Brexit among voters in Cheshire and across the UK.
Candidates who will battle it out in the Nantwich Town Council local elections on May 2 have been unveiled.
In total, there are 16 candidates nominated in the Nantwich North and West Ward, and a further 10 in the Nantwich South Ward.

The full list of candidates for next month’s Cheshire East Council elections have been confirmed.
Voters will head to the polls on Thursday May 2 to decide who they want to represent them on the borough council for the next four years.
Nantwich residents are being urged to register to vote in the forthcoming local elections on May 2.
Those who are not registered will not be able to cast votes to elect councillors to represent them on Cheshire East Council as well on local town and parish councils.
Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is inviting patients, carers and members of the public to stand as a Governor in its upcoming Council of Governor Elections.
The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, has a Council of Governors made up of 29 individuals over four constituencies.

Voters in Willaston and Rope Ward made a bold statement with their appointment of first time candidate Sarah Pochin.
Conservative candidate Pochin took the seat from outspoken UKIP candidate Brian Silvester in a comfortable victory in the Cheshire East Council elections.
Cheshire East has until end of July to submit more evidence in its fight to get a Local Plan recognised.
The new deadline has been set by planning inspectors to take account of the general and local elections.
Willaston and Rope Councillor Brian Silvester has been selected as candidate for the ward in Cheshire East Council elections on May 7.
Cllr Silvester has also been nominated for election to Rope Parish Council, with elections on the same day.
Only one in six people in Nantwich voted in the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner election, it has emerged. The count for the election is due to get underway this afternoon (November 16) in Warrington.
