Man, 25, rescued from River Weaver in Nantwich

A man was rescued from the fast flowing River Weaver in Nantwich in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews and ambulance teams were on the scene at around 3.15am at the river in Mill Street area of the town.

Fly-tipping costs Cheshire East Council £239,000 a year but it has a “dismal” record for dealing with offenders and issued just 22 fixed penalty notices for 4,456 offences, councillors heard.

A national league table published by the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs revealed Cheshire East was 211 out of 308 councils when it came to issuing notices (FPNs) for fly-tipping.

CEC would need 20% Council Tax rise to cover SEND deficit

Cheshire East Council would have to increase council tax by 20% just to cover the deficit in its special needs budget, the council leader has said.

Cllr Sam Corcoran (Lab) has called on all councillors to look into the SEND provision (special educational needs and disabilities) so they can debate the issue at the next meeting of full council and come up with suggestions as to how the system can be improved.
