Nantwich residents have hit out at the closure of a skate and cycle park which authorities say has had to be shut “on safety grounds”.
The area within Barony Park in Nantwich is used by scores of youngsters playing on their skateboards and bikes, but has fallen into disrepair in recent weeks.
Fencing around Barony Park in Nantwich is more aimed at enhancing the site and may not prevent unauthorised access, a council chief admitted today.
The comments come after a small group of travellers (pictured) were able to gain access to the park at the weekend, despite the new fencing being erected around the perimeter.
A Cabinet councillor at Cheshire East says the new fence around Barony Park in Nantwich is part of a “green space masterplan”.
And Cllr Mick Warren believes people will “quickly get used to it” as fencing rails of varying heights are set to be installed around the perimeter of the park.
Barony Park play area in Nantwich is among 15 run by Cheshire East Council which will re-open on July 6 as lockdown restrictions ease further.
Along with Queens Park in Crewe, the Barony will be open again for families and children with measures in place to make them as safe as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.

And work in Nantwich, given the thumbs up by councillors at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, will include fencing around Barony Park which local residents have been campaigning for to prevent unauthorised traveller camps.
