Repairing Cheshire East’s roads will take a staggering 400 years if the investment from government continues at the same rate.
That’s the claim made by the chair of the highways committee at Cheshire East Council, Cllr Craig Browne.
Motorists in Crewe and Nantwich are being warned of some disruption as Cheshire East Council steps up its road repairs programme in next few weeks.
With major gas pipe works on Welsh Row, bridge repairs on A530 Whitchurch Road, and fibre broadband works across the town, it could be a summer of delays and diversions.
The busy A530 Whitchurch Road near Nantwich is to be closed for up to eight days for major canal bridge repairs.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the route and follow diversions between July 31 and August 8.
A section of the busy Llangollen Canal at Hurleston in Nantwich is to close for urgent repairs.
Canal River Trust engineers are on site between Bridges 3 and 4 due to a “severe leakage” and a full closure will take place from Tuesday (April 20).

The Government is set to invest more than £8 million on patching up Cheshire’s roads next year.
Cheshire East Council will receive £4,632,000 from the Department for Transport in 2019-20, while Cheshire West and Chester Council will receive £3,525,000.

Councillors and officers at Cheshire East are hopeful a new code of practice will mean the end of ‘bodge job’ pothole repairs on major roads.
Cheshire East Council is set to adopt a new code of practice for road maintenance – called the Well Managed Highway Infrastructure – in line with Government guidelines introduced two years ago.
Work has started on the next phase to repair the Shropshire Union Canal breach near Middlewich after a giant 12-metre deep hole was left in the canal bank.
Paddle gates on the locks, which allow water into the canal, had been left open by a member of the public which caused the canal to overflow.
