Nantwich pupils send Christmas messages to care home residents

Young pupils from Nantwich schools brought festive cheer to care home residents by delivering Christmas cards.

The students used the artistic skills to create personalised cards as part of a community scheme by Nantwich Educational Partnership (NEP).

A51 trunk road at Wardle re-opens after 16-week closure

Council chiefs say highways engineers “worked tirelessly” to complete works on the busy A51 at Wardle near Nantwich which was closed for 16 weeks.

Work to stabilise 750 metres of carriageway began in August and required the complete closure of one of the busiest roads in the borough.

Some Cheshire East residents won’t have to pay any council tax from next April following changes being made to the support scheme.

At present people in receipt of benefits such as jobseeker’s allowance or income support get 75% of their council tax paid under the council tax support scheme.

Care workers should be well paid for doing a tough and sometimes “unpleasant” job just as miners were in past years for digging coal, a Cheshire East councillor said.

Cllr Stewart Gardiner was speaking at a Cheshire East Council meeting where it was announced the authority has been awarded £982,203 to help recruit and retain care staff during the winter months.

A young swimmer from Wybunbury has achieved her Royal Lifesaving Society gold medallion – and is believed to be the youngest in the UK to pass it.

Twelve-year-old Izzy Serventi, a member of Nantwich Neptunes Lifesaving Club, worked towards the amazing achievement while attending sessions at Nantwich Pool.

The historic Crewe Works site is to receive major investment after site owners Alstom won an HS2 contract to build a new generation of 54 high speed trains in North and Midlands.

Three days of icy, non-gritted roads near Nantwich and Audlem saw “three catastrophic accidents and the school bus cancelled”, the former leader of Cheshire East Council said.

Cllr Rachel Bailey (Audlem, Con) told a full council she had not intended speaking on the winter gritting programme and had planned to ask a question about home school transport.
