Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes rolls again after pandemic gap

Thousands enjoyed the return of the Wybunbury Fig Pie Wakes event yesterday (June 11) for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic, writes Jonathan White.

Fig pies, made from a traditional recipe containing a hard pastry, were rolled from The Swan Inn pub down Main Road to see how far they would travel.

Councillors call on CEC boss to drive Middlewich Road diversion

Three councillors have called on Cheshire East Council’s chief executive to drive the 10.6 mile diversion route caused by A530 Middlewich Road closure to see the havoc it is causing local people.

Rachel Bailey, who represents Audlem, Margaret Simon, of Wistaston, and Patrick Redstone, of Odd Rode ward, have written to Lorraine O’Donnell saying the road closure has blocked important ambulance routes, added delays to commutes and caused disruption throughout Crewe and Nantwich.

Family and friends of father and son Roger and Bradley Stockton are mourning their deaths after the couple were killed during a TT Race on Isle of Man yesterday.

Roger, 56, and Bradley, 21, both from Crewe, were racing in a sidecar when they crashed at the start of the second lap of their race.

Firefighters have blasted a “ridiculous” decision to use pick-up trucks with a single fire extinguisher for some incidents – and several have refused to crew the vehicles on safety grounds.

Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service (CFRS) says the rapid response rescue units (RRRUs) have operated safely from Holmes Chapel and Sandbach fire stations for the past 13 years.

Both events were free entry, with donations received, and started with an exhibition on Saturday illustrating key events throughout Her Majesty’s 70-year reign.
