I am writing to express my disappointment and frustration with Cheshire East Council’s decision to introduce parking charges at most council-owned car parks from Monday 2nd December 2024.
For years, these car parks have been free to use, encouraging residents and visitors alike to shop in our local town centres.
Motorists are being warned to be aware of controversial changes to car parks in Cheshire East which go live from Monday December 2.
From that date, parking charges will come into effect at most CEC-owned car parks where parking is currently free.
Nantwich Food Festival committee members warned tonight that next year’s festival may not go ahead.
It has emerged that a long term agreement with Cheshire East Council to use two main car parks in the town for free during the festival has come to an end.

New parking charges which will see a hike in current fees on most Cheshire East Council car parks will come into force on July 8.
The new charges were voted through by the council’s highways and transport committee in January.
Cheshire East Council could be discriminating against older people with its plans to make all but one car parks in Nantwich cashless.
That was the claim made at Nantwich Town Council, as they discussed CEC’s bid to make all car parks cashless apart from Snow Hill.

Cheshire East Council has refused a formal request from the Conservatives to reconsider the decision to introduce parking charges in free towns and hike up prices in others.
The highways and transport committee last month voted in favour of changes to the parking policy, which includes introducing charges in the existing ‘free’ towns and villages of Audlem, Alsager, Bollington, Handforth, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich, Poynton, Prestbury and Sandbach.
The “free after 3pm” car parking scheme on some Cheshire East Council car parks will be kept after the results of a public consultation.
But parking charges looks set to be introduced in most car parks where it is currently free, and charges may also be brought in on Sundays.

The leader of Cheshire East Council is urging the council to look into installing solar panels at some of its car parks across the borough.
Cheshire East is about to start work on a large-scale solar farm – which will generate renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions – on land next to the composting plant at Leighton Grange Farm in Crewe.

Cheshire East are planning to close and build housing on two of the main car parks in Crewe town centre, Delamere Street and Chester Street.
The lost car parking spaces will be replaced by a six-storey 390 place car park, on the Royal Arcade development site in the town centre, costing Cheshire East taxpayers a huge £11,315,315.

Cheshire East Conservatives, together with cross-party colleagues, rejected proposals to consult on a standardised system of charging ‘zones’ across all the borough’s car parks.

Councillors have backed calls for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points across Cheshire East as a report shows there are “extensive gaps”.
They say installing more charging points in car parks would encourage people to buy electric vehicles, improve the environment and could be a money spinner for the council.
