Hundreds of villagers turned out in force to enjoy Wistaston’s annual Duck Race and Children’s model boat race.

The 26th ‘Annual Community Duck Race and Children’s Model Boat Race’ took place at the Joey the Swan parkland area, and organised by volunteers from Wistaston Community Council village events team and Wistaston Memorial Hall.

Britain in Bloom judges from The Royal Horticultural Society toured Wistaston to judge the village in the Town category of the Britain in Bloom 2023 UK Finals.

Two judges met chairman of Wistaston Parish Council John Moore and members of the Wistaston in Bloom group and Wistaston Conservation Group.

The 25th Community Duck Race and Children’s Model Boat Race made its return to Joey the Swan recreation ground in Wistaston.

The event was opened by Wistaston Rose Queen Emily Edge. The 11-year-old was crowned by Revd Mike Turnbull at St Mary’s Church, Wistaston in June.

A kind-hearted Wistaston resident has donated a chainsaw art sculpture she produced to the village so it can be enjoyed by the community.

Sandie Wilson, 61, handed over the 25-inch tall oak sculpture of an owl which has been placed on a plinth in Joey the Swan recreation ground in Wistaston by the Wistaston Conservation Group.

Wistaston residents fear polluting waste from a storm drain at Wistaston Brook is killing wildlife and causing “vile” odours in the area.

The storm drain has been flooding the brook which runs along the popular Joey the Swan recreation ground, where families go for exercise and walking dogs.

The Joey the Swan recreation ground in Wistaston is named after an adult male cob swan that lived there in the 1930s.

In the 1930s a pair of swans – a cob and a pen – took up permanent residence on a pond or ‘stew’, opposite the Wistaston Hall.
